Community Supported Agriculture is a model of small scale food distribution that unites farmers and consumers in their journey to eating the freshest possible vegetables and cultivating local food communities. In this model, consumers invest in their share ahead of the growing season to help farmers with the costs of getting the crops in the ground, and then they reap the rewards in the form of a weekly vegetable box full of fresh vegetables. Farming comes with a lot of risk and in our current food system farmers bare the brunt of that risk. This model of food distribution works to create food systems that empower farmers and consumers by putting their food system back in their hands and by allowing direct support of farmers and labourers by sharing in both the risks and rewards involved with food production. When the farmer has a bad crop, you carry some of that burden, but, when there is a good crop, you share in the rewards.
The Elm Rock Farm 2020 Vegetable Share is an adaptation of this model. We are in our second year of growing our vegetable farm from the ground up. Last year we sold our vegetables at a couple of farmers markets as well as through an informal vegetable box program, however, many of you expressed interest in a more consistent share of our vegetables. So here it is!!!
This year we are opening up a small number of vegetable shares. The program will run for 16 weeks at $25 per week. In return, you’ll receive a weekly vegetable box with a variety of *in-season vegetables and herbs throughout the growing season. We are also providing an option to add-on weekly delivery for an additional $5 per week. Pick-up will be between 4:00pm and 7:00pm on Thursdays (subject to change, location TBD). Delivery will be between 6:00pm and 8:00pm on Thursdays (subject to change).
As this is our first year doing this, we are not asking for the full amount of the share upfront. Instead, we are asking for a deposit of $100 (full share) or $50 (half share), which will be applied to the final 4 shares (for full shareholders) or final 2 shares (for half shareholders) of the year. This will allow us to learn as we go, provide the best possible service, and adapt to the inevitable surprises that Mother Nature will throw at us.
The deposit is non-refundable.
*Vegetable and herb quantities and varieties included in the boxes will vary throughout the season based on yields and what is in-season. We will work to provide you with a good variety and bounty!!!
